Benefits of Taekwondo
Established in 1999, Rhode Island Taekwondo is a non-profit organization that provides a unique opportunity for children and adults from all backgrounds to train in the traditional Korean martial art of Taekwondo. We have a strong community atmosphere and welcome all family members ages 3 and up to participate. We aim to help individuals cultivate mind-body awareness and achieve their highest potential. By challenging students both mentally and physically, Taekwondo benefits children and adults in many ways, including:
- Courage
- Confidence
- Perseverance
- Physical Fitness
- Self-Defense
- Discipline
- Flexibility
- Endurance
- Mind-body awareness
A typical Taekwondo class combines high-energy kicking drills with the control and balance of forms and self-defense techniques. The martial art of Taekwondo is renowned for its spinning and flying kicking combinations. Forms are a choreographed fighting sequence against an imaginary opponent. Self-defense training applies the skills learned in class in a practical way, confronting students with real-life scenarios in a safe environment. In combination with techniques and drills, the structure and etiquette enforced on the mat cultivates all of the above-mentioned qualities that martial artists strive to develop and enhance.
In keeping with the hierarchal tradition of martial arts, Rhode Island Taekwondo employs a system of nine ranks, or gups, leading up to black belt. Belt Promotion Tests are held three or four times per year and a student must have permission to test from the Head Instructor, or Sabumnim. Each student progresses at an individual pace that reflects his or her growth as a martial artist. While addressing a diverse range of abilities, we ensure that individuals training at Rhode Island Taekwondo receive instruction in all aspects of martial arts training, including basic and advanced techniques, practical self-defense, protective blocking, powerful striking, traditional forms, vigorous kicking, and board breaking. The difficulty level for each of these areas increases as a student advances forward in rank. This balanced approach will guide a martial artist down a well-rounded path to black belt and beyond.
